Museum of Archena
It has a modernist design in keeping with the surrounding building area. The building has four interconnected rooms and all of them have transparent glazing on the outside so that visitors do not forget that they are in a typical natural setting of the Ricote Valley. Apart from the archaeological and historical remains of Archena which will be permanently preserved, the museum also houses a temporary exhibition hall to show other historical riches of the area.
The building is located in the middle of a very emblematic and well-known natural area of Archena, on the banks of the Segura River and near Monte Tío Pío, popular for its archaeological wealth.
The museum houses archaeological pieces and works of great historical content found in this municipality and distributed among various museums in Spain and among many private individuals in the town.
Many cultures and civilisations have left their mark on our municipality throughout history. The relief of the municipality in the Ricote Valley, together with the passing of the Segura River and the mild climate, have made it one of the most fertile orchards in the Region.
This is why, from prehistoric times to the present day, various peoples have settled on our land, and the Museum of Archena has collected important examples of this: archaeological remains, unique pieces, testimonies, anecdotes, etc., which show visitors the true history of the Villa Termal de Archena and make it one of the most evocative and spectacular landscapes in the Region of Murcia.
Some archaeological studies affirm that esparto grass was used in prehistoric times in the Region of Murcia, although it was the Romans who promoted this industry located, among other regions, in the Region of Murcia.
Although the preparation and plaiting of esparto grass is nowadays mainly carried out in large factories in an industrial way, there are still small artisans who continue the tradition, a clear example of which can be seen in this Museum in Archena.
